Curriculum

Hato Petera College offers courses that are designed to lead to approved qualifications approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. These qualifications go onto either university or tertiary institutions or to apprenticeships and trade. Clear pathways are presented to students as they progress through the school to ensure that the subjects they study will help them reach their academic and career goals.

Special Character Both Te Reo Maori and Religious Education are compulsory subjects for all students attending the college. Students take these subjects from Year 9 – 13.

Learning How to Learn Programme All students are involved for twenty minutes at least four times a week in the Learning How to Learn Programme. This programme is designed to assist them by providing literacy and learning strategies.

Rumaki Reo is offered to students in Years 9. Most subjects are taught in Te Reo Maori but teachers also concentrate on ensuring that students’ abilities in English are also developed.

Year 9 Students start their secondary schooling taking a course that is appropriate to their learning abilities and covers all essential learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum. Students are rotated around the option subjects throughout the year.

Students in Year 10 must meet the minimum requirements before advancing to the next level.

Year 10 Students continue to learn in all essential learning areas in the curriculum but chose one option subject in Year 10.

Students in Years 9 and 10 who have the ability may be considered for studying one or more NCEA Level 1 subjects.

Year 11 Students who have met the minimum entry requirements may study at this level. Students will take courses that offer credits at Level 1 in the National Certificate of Educational Achievement. NCEA)

Year 12 Most students are this level will study at NCEA Level 2. Some may take a combination of Level 1 and 2 standards. Gateway (gaining experience and qualifications for work) is offered at this level to a selected number of students.)

Year 13 Students at this level are mainly studying for NCEA Level 3 and focussing on gaining entrance to university or another tertiary institution. Gateway (gaining qualifications for work) is also offered at this level to a selected number of students.)
